AVL Transmission TS™

The test system (TS) to optimize your transmission.
Header

The increasing complexity of modern propulsion systems is placing increasing demands on the instrumentation and test systems. Parallel development activities of key propulsion system components (ICE, hybrid engine, e-drive, transmission, etc.) require transmission testing to be performed at the earliest possible stage. AVL Transmission TS™ is designed to help you manage the validation of any transmission throughout the development process. We have longstanding experience in the development of transmission test systems for passenger cars, light-duty and heavy-duty trucks, busses, tractors, and off-road vehicles. We provide solutions where the original propulsion unit is replaced by a suitable AVL drive unit. These solutions can be applied to a wide range of applications, e.g. durability, functionality, performance, and NVH.

OEMs and suppliers are developing components and systems for new propulsion system concepts. In the past, the requirements for an AVL drive unit were framed by the data for ICEs. With the shift to pure electrified propulsion systems, our drive must also cover the data for e-drives. This means a smaller size with high power density, higher speeds, and more flexibility and variants in e-motor design compared with the ICE.

History

Our modern transmission test systems are built to validate any kind of transmission with different types, speeds, torques, and power classes. The biggest challenge is replacing a transverse mounted ICE or e-motor in a close axle arrangement. The AVL drive unit must cover the desired speed and torque requirements, and fit into a given installation space. Our transmission test systems cover the variability of e-axles in a co-axial or offset arrangement, and the connection of e-motor to transmission with intelligent mechanical solutions. The optimized toolchain significantly reduces the duration of the design and validation process. Transmission tests can be executed in an early development phase without having a mature propulsion unit. This minimizes the risk of design changes in a later stage of the development process.

Challenge

We add even more value to the testing process with our AVL PUMA 2™ automation software, which synchronizes measurements from every device. This high level of data quality – combined with the system’s precise measurement and control and simulation capability – ensures that our customers can develop transmission systems within a reduced timespan, by performing transient tests, time lapse tests, or tests in road load simulation.

  • Transmission Performance LD
An AVL DynoPrime as a drive unit replaces the ICE or the hybrid propulsion unit. The slim design and short length enable direct mounting to the transmission input shaft, even in a transverse axle arrangement. A powerful engine model enables simulation of the static and dynamic behavior of an ICE. Furthermore, the speed irregularity caused by combustion can also be simulated.
  • E-Transmission Performance LD
The AVL drive unit covers the desired speed and torque requirements of the replaced e-motor, and must fit into a given installation space. The AVL solution covers the variability of e-axles in a co-axial or offset arrangement, and the connection of e-motor to transmission with intelligent mechanical solutions. An AVL DynoPrime with a slim design and a speed range of up to 20,000 rpm enable direct mounting to the transmission input shaft in a transverse layshaft axle arrangement. A solution using a matching gearbox offers more flexibility and allows e-axle replacement in a co-axial arrangement.
  • Transmission Performance HD
The AVL drive unit covers the desired speed and torque requirements; the installation space does not need to be considered. Two, four, or more load units with a torque range up to 40,000 Nm are used. Sometimes matching transmissions are necessary to achieve the high torque requirements of the unit under test. The AVL transmission test system solutions also enable HD axle testing.
  • NVH Testing
The acoustics of the drive unit are optimized to achieve the required noise level. Therefore, the NVH chamber is installed and coupled directly to the transmission. The load units are installed outside the NVH chamber to achieve the ambient noise.

Nothing is more constant than change. Propulsion system architecture and components have changed dramatically in recent years. Consequently, use cases and applications have also changed. AVL has always been able to design the right solutions for our customer needs. Meaning our customers can focus on their development and trust their measurement results.”
